What We’re Up To

Welcoming A New Season of MEDP Interns

We're happy to be able to participate in the McMinnville Economic Development Partnership (MEDP) internship program once again! This year we have two bright students with us who are focused on the software side of our business.

Devri Anderson is currently studying Computer Science at Oregon State University. Her role with us involves helping with production and creating a verification page for items in the warehouse that incorporate both front-end design and back-end functionality. Read more about Devri below.

What have you liked most about working here so far?

"It feels good to be part of something bigger than myself. Being part of a company that cares about environmental sustainability and supports people in need makes what I do feel more meaningful."

Do you have any plans or hopes for the future?

"I hope to travel more and experience different cultures around the world. I would like to visit all the national parks in the United States in my lifetime. So far, I have explored 26 of these beautiful places. There is something special about being out in nature, feeling small among the landscapes. It helps remind me that amidst the chaos, there is still beauty in the world and that there is something greater than our individual selves."

What do you like to do in your spare time?

"I love being outside exploring nature, trying new restaurants and wineries, and going to concerts."

Is there anything not many people know about you?

"I am a gamer. During last winter break, I finally got to live my dream of receiving my Hogwarts letter and stayed awake for 24 hours straight playing Hogwarts Legacy. My wizard name was Demione."

Kurt Remmick grew up in McMinnville and has been actively volunteering with us even before joining the internship program. He recently graduated from McMinnville High School and will be starting at Linfield University this fall. So far in his internship, Kurt has learned SQL and how to query the Swedemom database. He has also gained experience with several programming languages, including C#. His job involves studying software, intaking items, finding bugs in the system, and identifying areas for improvement.

Read more about Kurt below.

What have you liked most about working here so far?

"I really like all the people that I work with at Swedemom, they are extremely respectful and thoughtful people, and are always considerate of helping each other.  The work culture here is better than I could have imagined."

Do you have any plans or hopes for the future?

"My biggest wishes are to publish games, get more serious with investing, and to work for a software or retail company, such as Amazon."

What do you like to do in your spare time?

"I like to make digital art, program games, and do physical activities like swimming, weight lifting, and nature walks."

Is there anything not many people know about you?

"Most people don't know that I paint, usually oil paintings."

Both Kurt and Devri have been invaluable resources in their time with us so far. We wish them the best of luck in their futures and hope to continue working with them in some capacity once their internship ends.

Thanks for being part of the team Devri and Kurt!

Our Impact So Far In 2024

Our mission is to take donated goods and pass them on to other nonprofit and community organizations to help them serve their clients. This includes students in school, individuals struggling with homelessness or lack of resources, elderly folks in care facilities, single parents, and more. We even pass along items to animal shelters! So far in 2024, we have been able to make 45 deliveries, totaling hundreds of items, to our nonprofit partners by passing on your donations of desks, tables, chairs, beds, cooking items, clothes, school supplies, bedding, blankets, books, towels, appliances, TVs, lamps, and so much more. We have donated to organizations like YCAP, McMinnville Library, Lions Club, First Baptist Church, City Outreach, St. Pauly's, A Family Place, and more. Thank you for your contribution in our mission of community support and sustainability! Know that your donations truly are making a difference in our community and in the lives of struggling individuals.

We couldn't do it without you!

Volunteer Spotlight

Meet our newest store volunteer, Sandy Ecker!

We are so happy to welcome one of our newest volunteers to the Swedemom team! Sandy has stepped in to assist our operations during a time that is needed most. She has done an amazing job so far helping us at The Swedemom Store organizing and creating new displays to attract customers to share our mission with them. Thanks for being with us, Sandy!

How did you get involved with the organization?

"My first introduction to MacHub/Swedemom was actually through my husband, Dick, who was already volunteering on Wednesdays doing intake of sports related items. Somehow we found out that he was working with a cousin of mine, Cami, whom I had not seen for a very long time. Our dads are first cousins and best friends. They and our moms were best men and maid of honor in each other's weddings. Small world. Dick and I recently married in October and I lost my job right before the wedding as my company changed owners and made changes. Cami asked me if I'd have any interest in helping to organize and merchandise the new space after the holidays while I was not working. Of course I was happy to and I enjoy doing just that and helping customers in the store. I volunteer a couple of half days a week and extra when I can."

 What is your background in?

"Most of my life I've worked in the medical field and sales, some of which involved merchandising. Most recently I was employed at a large retirement community in Salem where I was in the Life Enrichment department. We organized, set up and planned events and entertainment. I also taught crafts and hosted a daily coffee chat which I really enjoyed."

What is your favorite part about Swedemom Center of Giving?

"My favorite part of Swedemom Center of Giving is working with the other volunteers, employees and of course my reconnected cousin, Cami!! She is amazing!! She's grown such a wonderful organization that helps so many people in so many ways right here in our community."

What do you do in your free time?

"This summer is keeping my husband and I busy keeping our flowers and plants alive in the heat and making our house a home. Also, spending time with family, my aging parents and friends making more memories! I do love to sew and craft when I can and we hope to do some traveling soon!"
